The list of favorites is going out a little late but only because I’ve been extremely busy as of late. Always a good thing! This is my list of favorite reads in 2017 in order of date read, the first being the first favorite book of 2017. Have you read any of these?
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
I picked this up for many reasons: plenty of positive reviews, constant urging from friends, my own positive experience with his other books, and the movie had just been released. I loved it. This middle-grade fantasy touched upon emotional honesty and will make a full grown adult cry like a child. It also became my son’s all-time favorite book.
The Angelfall Series by Susan Ee
The first book came out several years ago but I ran through all three in 2017 back-to-back. I loved the story lines, the edginess, and the completely unexpected elements. It surprised the heck out of me – this H.P. Lovecraft type of horror infused within a YA story of killer fallen angels.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
If this list was ordered by favorites, The Song of Achilles would sit firmly on the top in the number one position. An absolutely fantastic story on Achilles and Patroclus during the Trojan War.
The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon
This is a fantastic high fantasy with a strong and smart heroine. The tone and writing style reminded me of Uprooted by Naomi Novik, another favorite.
Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo
This series was in my future after reading The Grisha trilogy a while back. There was no way reading this series wasn’t going to happen. It lived up to the hype for me. Never had a doubt.
The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber
Yes, it is science fiction. But it isn’t high-concept scifi. This book uses planetary distance to examine how normal people deal with great distances separating those connected by love. It is an amazing book.
The Shades of Magic Series by V.E. Schwab
I picked up this series because of the hype surrounding it. I was worried. I can often get let down by hype-series. But this time I was in heaven. I read all three back-to-back.
Seven Ways to Trick a Troll by Lise Lunge-Larsen
Having children, I read a lot of children’s books. This book is far-and-away my favorite children’s book of 2017. Every parent should consider adding this book to their child’s bookcase.
