The Portsmouth American Legion puts on a Memorial Day parade every year in Portsmouth. The event wasn’t listed in the papers this year but it didn’t necessarily need to be – it’s an anticipated event. Scores of people were out and about downtown, enjoying the early summertime weather, and those who weren’t aware of the afternoon parade received a nice surprise.
It was a stately affair beginning with the solemn flag bearers.

Some of the area’s most distinguished residents.
The Portsmouth Middle School Band kept our feet tapping!
This might be my favorite photograph of the bunch – a ghostly reminder.
Here come our future defenders of freedom!
The Cub Scouts might have been the cutest in the lineup. I also might be a bit biased.
I really want to know who this guy is. For now, he is Mr. Patriotic.

Our thanks to the Portsmouth American Legion. We also offer our unending gratitude to those who couldn’t be with us today – those who gave everything – those who will never be forgotten.
